Key points
- Practise six skills across the specified practice areas. [1]
- Review legal accuracy alongside delivery, not instead of it. [1]
- Repeat weak tasks independently after focused feedback.
- Confirm tutor fit, rate and feedback scope before booking.
Why fluent delivery can still miss the task
SQE2 has four oral and twelve written assessments. Skills and application of law are weighted equally overall. The client interview itself is assessed on skills; its attendance note/legal analysis also assesses law. [1] A polished conversation therefore does not replace a complete analysis, and correct notes do not excuse failing to understand the client's priorities.
Diagnose errors separately. Did you miss a fact, choose the wrong principle, apply it incompletely or explain the result poorly? For a fictional property buyer who wants to move quickly, ask what 'quickly' means, identify missing documents and explain what needs checking. Avoid presenting an uncertain outcome as settled. Ethics is pervasive and issues are not flagged for candidates. [1]
- Keep separate records of knowledge gaps and performance habits.
- Rewrite one vague recommendation into a specific next step.
Connect each practice area to the work it requires
SQE1's FLK1 and FLK2 are separate functioning legal knowledge assessments, not SQE2 skills papers. FLK1 includes business practice, dispute resolution, contract and tort; FLK2 includes property, wills, land, trusts and criminal subjects, alongside other specified content. [4] SQE2 uses its own FLK subset rather than testing every SQE1 subject again. [1]
Build a coverage grid for client interviewing and attendance notes, advocacy, case and matter analysis, research, writing and drafting. SQE2 advocacy is set in dispute resolution and criminal litigation; interviews concern property practice and wills/estates. Written tasks also cover business practice. [1]
- Civil disputes: revise limitation, service, interim applications and settlement. [3]
- Criminal practice: revisit police-station advice, bail and evidence. [3]
- Property and estates: connect title enquiries, will validity and administration steps. [3]

Use a revision cycle that produces evidence of progress
Start with one oral task and one written task without notes. Compare the work with the relevant official criteria, then select two recurring weaknesses. [2] If you know the rule but cannot explain it, practise a short client explanation. If the rule is wrong, repair that knowledge before another full timed attempt.
A useful weekly cycle is a short recall session, a timed task, feedback and a fresh scenario testing the same weakness. Rotate practice areas so familiarity with one context does not hide gaps elsewhere. Label revision materials with the applicable assessment specification and sitting-specific law cut-off. The SRA tests law as it stands four calendar months before the first assessment in the window, including changes implemented on that cut-off date. [1]
- Record the error, correction and date for a fresh attempt.
- Revisit the skill without the tutor's prompts before moving on.

Rehearse the actual oral and written constraints
For interviews, practise the official sequence: ten minutes' preparation, a twenty-five-minute interview and twenty-five minutes for the handwritten attendance note. Detailed advice is not required during the interview, but sufficient preliminary advice and attention to concerns are needed. [2] Start with open questions, clarify gaps, summarise instructions and practise converting your notes into analysis.
Advocacy allows forty-five minutes to prepare and fifteen minutes for submissions. [2] Practise stating the order sought, linking the applicable test to facts and answering interruptions before returning to your structure. For writing, identify the recipient before drafting: the same issue needs different explanations for a client and a supervising partner.
Research uses supplied sources, including potentially irrelevant material, and requires no research trail. [2] Select relevant authority, apply it and state the resulting advice; do not spend the task narrating every search.
- Rehearse analysis and research at sixty minutes, writing at thirty and drafting at forty-five. [2]
- Check names, dates, instructions and legal effect before finishing.
Choose feedback that changes your next attempt
Bring a self-written practice answer, a short description of your difficulties and the specification for your sitting. Ask a prospective tutor how they would distinguish missing law from weak client focus. Someone supporting advocacy should be able to explain how they would rehearse questions from the judge, not simply review a prepared speech.
Agree the session output beforehand: perhaps annotated drafting feedback, an interview debrief or two priorities for your next timed task. An online session can use role-play and shared documents if agreed with the tutor; availability and delivery arrangements must be confirmed. Use fictional facts rather than real client files. Between sessions, attempt a new problem alone. Your ability to apply the correction without hints is more useful than collecting another model answer.
- Ask about relevant SQE2 skills teaching and practice-area experience.
- Clarify whether preparation and written feedback are included in the quoted charge.
Confirm cost, scope and fit before committing
The current published tuition range is £99–£229 per hour. It is not a fixed SQE2 package price. Confirm the individual tutor's rate, session length, feedback arrangements and cancellation terms before booking. Explain your budget and ask which specific weakness a proposed session would address. Neither a tutor match nor availability should be assumed.
Tuition can complement independent preparation for a first attempt or resit, but it cannot guarantee a result. If your foundations are weak, discuss whether targeted law revision should come before timed skills work. Ethical support means explanation, original exercises and feedback on permitted practice. It does not include writing live assessed answers, using confidential assessment content or advising real clients. Start with a focused enquiry naming your sitting, weakest skill and desired feedback.
- Share learning goals without personal or confidential client information.
- Agree what you will practise independently after the session.

Private practice · hypothetical question
Original interview-to-attendance-note drill
Original private-revision hypothetical. A fictional client is buying a small office in England and wants to exchange quickly because a moving contractor is holding a provisional date. The client mentions an access route used by neighbours but has no title documents. A partner asks you to interview the client and prepare an initial attendance note. Assume no title investigation has been completed and no specific contractual terms have been supplied. Outline five questions, then write a short note distinguishing facts, missing information, issues requiring investigation and next steps. Do not decide whether the title is acceptable or promise a completion date. This is a learning exercise, not legal advice.
Work through your own response first, then reveal a hint or compare your reasoning with the self-review. Each panel opens independently.
Hint 1
Clarify the client's timetable and reasons for it.
Hint 2
Ask what is known about the access route and supporting documents.
Hint 3
Separate preliminary explanation from conclusions needing investigation.
Reveal the self-review answer
A sound response clarifies instructions, funding and timing, asks about the access route and documents, and records the client's priorities. The note flags title investigation and further enquiries rather than inventing rights or contractual consequences. It assigns document requests and review steps, records uncertainty and avoids guaranteeing a date. Title investigation, enquiries and client reporting are within the specified property-practice coverage. [3]

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
How much does SQE2 tutoring cost?
The published range is £99–£229 per hour. Confirm the matched tutor's actual rate and what the charge covers before booking. Do not assume that written feedback or preparation outside the session is included.
Can I practise SQE2 skills with a tutor online?
Online role-play and document review can support practice if agreed with the tutor. Confirm delivery arrangements, availability and any recording consent. Remote tuition should still include uninterrupted timed attempts, followed by feedback rather than continuous prompting.
How should I revise an attendance note?
Practise moving from interview notes to relevant facts, applied legal analysis, client-focused advice and next steps. Include any ethical issues and how to resolve them. The official attendance-note task is handwritten and lasts twenty-five minutes. [2]
Is targeted tuition suitable for a first attempt or a resit?
Either may benefit, depending on the gap. Bring permitted practice work and any feedback you can lawfully share. Ask whether the tutor's skills and practice-area experience match your needs; confirm fit rather than assuming every law tutor teaches SQE2.
Will a tutor write answers or advise my clients?
No. Support should build your own reasoning through original hypothetical exercises and permitted practice feedback. It should not produce live assessed submissions, obtain confidential assessment questions or provide legal advice on real client matters.
