The short answer

Do not pay someone to write any part of an assessed law dissertation for submission as your own. For students at English institutions, commercially providing or arranging a service that completes all or part of a relevant assessed assignment, and advertising such a service, are offences. The Act does not itself make a student criminally liable merely for using the service, but submitting outsourced work may still lead to academic-misconduct action.[1] [3]

Key points

  • Being behind is a reason to ask for permitted support early, not to replace your own authorship.
  • Check the dissertation brief, academic-integrity policy and module guidance before sharing assessment-related material.
  • Choose one next milestone that you will complete independently, then make it small enough to start.
  • Use tutoring for planning, general explanation and process reflection, while keeping assessed work entirely yours.

Can I pay someone to write my law dissertation?

Do not commission a third party to produce dissertation work you would submit as your own. Under the Skills and Post-16 Education Act 2022, commercially providing or arranging a relevant service for a student at an English institution is an offence, as is advertising it. The legislation has applied since 28 June 2022.[1]

The offences concern the provider, arranger and advertiser. Section 27(6) says a student does not commit those listed offences merely by using a relevant service, but that is not institutional permission. The QAA describes contract cheating as a third party completing work a student submits as their own where the input is not permitted.[1] [3]

The statutory rule is framed around English institutions, not identical rules throughout the UK. Wherever you study, check your institution’s current assessment rules before seeking dissertation assistance.[1] [2]

What counts as completing an assessed dissertation on your behalf?

The Act covers completing all or part of an assignment that cannot reasonably be regarded as personally completed by the student. It can also cover usable material prepared for that assignment or not generally published. The practical question is the contribution’s nature and use, not its label.[1]

No percentage, disclaimer or wording change makes outsourced assessed work safe. “Guidance”, “support” or a “model” does not decide whether a contribution replaces work you must do. Your brief and institutional rules determine what is permitted.[1] [2]

The explanatory notes distinguish prohibited services from accepted assistance where work remains the student’s own, but that is not blanket permission for third-party help. Institutions may specify permitted assistance, so check current rules rather than assuming another module uses the same boundary.[2]

Why does a “legitimate support” label not make outsourcing safe?

A service’s description, the statutory definition and your institution’s assessment rules are different things. A marketing label cannot decide whether help is permitted for your live dissertation. Before discussing assessment-related material, consult the module handbook, dissertation guidance and academic-integrity policy, then use your supervisor or student-support contact to clarify any uncertainty.[2] [4]

This is a protective step, not a punishment for getting stuck. The QAA recommends that students who are struggling, uncertain about an assessment or unable to start seek help from their marker, module leader, student-support adviser or academic-skills service rather than a contract-cheating site.[3]

For readers intending to qualify as solicitors, there is also a careful professional reason to protect academic integrity. The SRA lists a deliberate assessment offence involving plagiarism or cheating among matters it may take into account in character-and-suitability assessment. That is not an automatic outcome; the SRA considers matters case by case.[5]

I am behind: what should I do this week instead?

Start with the real timetable. Record the submission date and, if relevant, the deadline and process for any extension, mitigating-circumstances or wellbeing support under your institution’s procedures. Do not assume an option applies; use the published route or ask the appropriate institutional contact. Early, specific communication gives you a clearer basis for deciding what you can do independently next.[3]

Then choose one next independent milestone only. It might be making a dated personal work plan, listing the parts of the brief you do not understand, or preparing concise questions for a supervisor meeting. The milestone should create momentum without asking anyone else to research your topic, devise your dissertation content or review work for you.

Put that milestone into a short daily session and keep a dated record of the progress you make. Prospects advises breaking an independent dissertation into manageable stages and using supervisory contact proactively; the point is to reduce overwhelm while retaining ownership of the project.[6]

If circumstances are affecting your ability to work, use the support routes your own institution offers. The constructive objective is not to produce a perfect recovery plan in one day. It is to make an honest, documented start on the next task and to escalate appropriately when you need institutional guidance.

  • Confirm dates and applicable institutional processes.
  • Name one milestone you will personally complete next.
  • Prepare precise questions for permitted support.
  • Schedule a short independent work block and record the result.

What can legitimate one-to-one dissertation tutoring do?

Appropriate tutoring develops your ability to manage your own process. It can help you build a realistic independent study schedule, explain legal concepts in general terms, prepare questions for a productive supervisor meeting and reflect on the next process step. A tutor can use generic examples and questions to help you articulate your own plan, while you remain the sole author and decision-maker for the assessed dissertation.[2] [4]

The boundary is deliberate. The Law Tutors never writes, rewrites, substantially edits or paraphrases assessed work. It never researches, fact-checks, supplies sources or authorities, checks citations, completes an assessment, co-authors it, or produces bespoke material for it. It also does not inspect assessed text to give content-level feedback or make changes. Check your institution’s current rules before sharing any assessment-related material.[2]

How can I regain control without handing over my work?

Use a simple sequence: choose the next independent milestone, write down the questions you need answered by permitted support, keep a dated record of your progress, and return to the following milestone. This protects your authorship while making a large project more manageable. It also gives a supervisor or support adviser a clear account of where you are stuck.[6]

If you have time to develop your own project, the guides on choosing a law dissertation topic and law dissertation structure can support independent preparation. These resources are general information, not legal advice or a substitute for your institution’s regulations.

You do not have to solve the whole dissertation today. A calm first action, followed by permitted support and your own independent work, is a more durable way to restart than trying to transfer responsibility for the assessment.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal for a service to write my dissertation in England?

For a relevant assessed assignment undertaken by a student at an English institution, it is an offence to provide or arrange, in commercial circumstances, a relevant service that completes all or part of it; advertising that service is also an offence. The statutory offences target the provider, arranger and advertiser, while submitting outsourced work may still breach institutional rules.[1]

What counts as completing an assignment on my behalf?

The Act covers work completed wholly or partly for you that cannot reasonably be considered personally completed by you. It can also cover bespoke or non-generally-published material supplied for an assignment that you could use. There is no safe percentage or wording trick: check the assessment’s permitted-assistance rules.[1] [2]

What legitimate help can a law dissertation tutor provide?

A tutor can support independent planning, explain legal concepts generally, help you prepare questions for a supervisor and offer formative process support. The tutor must not write, rewrite, substantially edit, research, fact-check, supply sources, check citations, paraphrase or complete assessed work. Check your institution’s rules before sharing material.[2] [4]

What can I do this week if I am behind on my dissertation?

Confirm the submission date and any relevant institutional support process, then choose one small milestone you will complete independently. Prepare concise questions for your supervisor or an approved support route, work in short scheduled blocks and record progress. Breaking an independent dissertation into manageable stages can make restarting more manageable.[3] [6]

Could academic misconduct matter if I plan to qualify as a solicitor?

The SRA lists a deliberate assessment offence involving plagiarism or cheating among conduct it may take into account for character and suitability. It assesses matters case by case, so this does not mean an automatic outcome. The constructive response is to keep assessed work your own and seek permitted support early.[5]
